Surface fountains and aerators don't aerate enough in deep ponds, depriving fish and your pond's health of the benefits of aeration even at deep levels. Note about diffuser systems:

The depth of a pond determines how well a diffuser system will work.  The aeration system depends on the air bubbles rising from the bottom of the pond, and deeper ponds allow for more diffused aeration because there is more area for the bubbles to travel. Deeper ponds often require fewer diffusers than shallower ones. Try to install diffuser plates in deepest parts of pond rather than at shallower banks.

Islands, coves, or other obstacles to diffusion must be taken into account when choosing where to place and how many diffuser plates are needed. Also, long and narrow ponds will require more diffuser plates.

With this single-loop system, how many diffuser plates should I order, one or two?

If the pond is shallow, you need to order 2 diffusers instead of 1.  for example, if the pond is 1/2 acre, it needs to be a minimum of 9' deep for the single diffuser to work well. For that size, if the pond is under 9 feet in average depth, we recommend a 2 diffuser system.

If the pond is 1 acre, for a singer diffuser to work well your pond needs to be an average depth of at least 13'.
